Waste segregation is the process of separating waste, so that certain types of waste can be easily recycled. Not only does this help the environment, but when done correctly, can significantly reduce the cost of waste disposal for your company.
While Network Waste can collect and recycle around 70-80% of general waste, additional cost savings can be achieved through segregating the waste at the source. Waste segregation can be beneficial for almost any type of business and industry.
How does it work?
Our experienced Network Waste Solutions representatives will arrange an appointment to visit your sites and perform a waste management audit. The results of the audit will suggest a wide range of options on how you can increase recycling levels, whilst reducing your current waste disposal costs and helping the environment. A major element of this audit will consist of waste segregation.
When the plan is authorised by all parties, it is rolled into action. With the waste segregation element of the audit, existing waste containers may be replaced with alternative waste containers.
For example, an office block paid £40 a week to empty an 8yd Front End Loader containing general waste. Replacing the FEL with two wheelie bins and segregating aluminium drinks cans from the general waste, meant that the company would pay £10.50 per collection for the general waste, and nothing for the collection of the aluminium waste. This produced a saving of around £1,500 for the year, just by segregating a single waste stream. Eventually, further savings were produced as segregation increased with plastics and paper waste.
The same principals can be applied to the construction industry. Potentially, large savings can be made by segregating a site’s general waste skip into several skips. Network Waste can sometimes offset the costs of hiring an additional skip for the value of the scrap metal inside of a segregated metal skip. Significant savings can also be made for segregating wood, plastics, concrete and other waste streams.
Internal Waste Segregation
Not only can Network Waste change the way your waste is collected, but we can also provide bins for internal use, to help your staff adapt to waste segregation. We can supply a wide range of bins, from colour-coordinated standard waste bins, to “waste-stations” (prominent bins which are segregated for specific waste streams), and any signage that is required to distinguish between different waste bins. As part of the audit, we can suggest strategic places to locate the bins. For a simple example, placing paper recycling bins next to printers or photocopiers, to encourage unwanted printouts to be disposed with other paper waste.
